Tasks
Tasks for IPS-Challenge participants
Remember, this isn't about perfection – it's about learning, collaborating, and having fun with real-world concepts. Feel free to be creative and bring your unique perspective to each task. Whether you're sketching a simple mockup or diving into FHIR resources, every step is a chance to gain valuable insights. Your ideas, no matter how small, could make a real difference in cross-border healthcare. The goal is to learn, grow, and enjoy the process – happy exploring!
Task 1: Understanding IPS and FHIR
- Research the International Patient Summary (IPS) standard and its objectives.
- Learn the basic fundamentals of FHIR, including its structure and main data types.
Task 2: Use Case Analysis
- Identify the key information requirements for patient care in the chosen case.
- Explore how to query and retrieve relevant information from the IPS standard format.
Task 3: Patient Data Visualization
- Design a simple visualization for the relevant patient data based on the chosen use case. This can be either a functional prototype or a mockup.
- Explain how this visualization would assist healthcare professionals in the given use case.
Task 4: Working with Basic FHIR Resources
- Identify 3-4 key FHIR resources needed to represent the essential data of the use case.
- Create simple synthetic data examples for the specific event described in the use case, complementing the patient’s existing medical history already available on the FHIR server. Focus on creating data that reflects the new clinical event. For example, in Use Case 1, generate FHIR resources related to Klaus’s visit to the family health center in Magallanes, such as observations of his blood pressure and the medications prescribed during the visit. Ensure the data aligns with the patient's past medical history and validate the resources to ensure they meet FHIR standards.
Task 5: Validation of FHIR Resources
- Learn about and use the FHIR $validate function to verify the created resources.
- Briefly document the most common issues encountered and how to resolve them.
Task 6: Basic Exploration of Terminology Services
- Investigate how FHIR terminology services could be used to handle medical concepts in different languages.
- Propose a simple example of how this would apply in the chosen use case, considering that some narrative text in the clinical data is in German or Spanish, depending on the patient's origin.
Task 7: Reflection on Limitations and Improvements
- Identify 2-3 potential limitations of the IPS for the chosen use case.
- Propose brief ideas on how these limitations could be addressed.
Task 8: Final Presentation of results
- Prepare a brief presentation (5-10 minutes) summarizing the work done, challenges encountered, and lessons learned.
- Include a reflection on how FHIR and IPS can improve medical care in international scenarios.
- The presentation can showcase either a functional IT solution (prototype) or a more conceptual approach.
- The presentation format should be a poster and showcased at the upcoming FHIR Connectathon Chile 2025, taking place from January 8th to 10th, 2025, Santiago, Chile.
